While some people don’t experience any symptoms from a herniated disc, others may suffer from constant or recurring pain that shoots down their leg or arm, a numbness or tingling feeling that radiates down their leg or arm, and muscle weakness that causes clumsiness or loss of balance. If you’re experiencing discomfort due to a herniated disc, Dr. Edmond Hattaway, D.C. may recommend you undergo spinal decompression in Douglasville.

How Spinal Decompression Helps

Spinal decompression is a non-invasive chiropractic treatment method for herniated discs. This means that you don’t need to undergo surgery or take dangerous prescription medications. During spinal decompression therapy, you’ll lie down on a padded traction table, which Dr. Hattaway will control with a computer. The table will very gently and slowly stretch your spine so that the herniated disc retracts and relieves pressure on your nerves.

Good Candidates for Spinal Decompression

Dr. Hattaway may recommend that you undergo an x-ray or MRI to confirm that you have a herniated disc. He may also take your medical health history and perform a physical exam to determine if you’re a good candidate for spinal decompression. You may be a good candidate if you have lower back pain, neck pain, loss of mobility and flexibility, muscle weakness, or sciatica caused by a herniated disc or degenerative disc disease. You may not be a good candidate if you are pregnant, have a broken vertebra in your back, have had spinal fusion or a failed back surgery, have artificial discs or implants in your spine, or have not had sufficient recovery time post-surgery.

Treatments Combined with Spinal Decompression

Dr. Hattaway may recommend that you combine spinal decompression therapy with other treatment methods to ensure you have the best chance of relief. Common chiropractic treatments done along with spinal decompression therapy are electrical stimulation and chiropractic adjustments.
